Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk

You might be surprised to hear that there is actually a holiday called “National Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day.” It’s celebrated in February, as a day to let go of past regrets and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose. Not a bad idea, huh?

Whether you celebrate this unique holiday or not, you can let go of one regret—the continual annoyance of messiness. Instead of constantly wishing your environment was neat and tidy, why not make the decision to clean up each mess as you go?

Truly, this one small change can make a huge difference in your mood, your attitude, and your performance. All it takes is a little determination and practice. Before long, cleaning up your messes will become so automatic, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner.

Here are a few tips to help you clean up your “spilled milk” immediately, and prevent a buildup of messiness in your home and workplace:

Make a deal with yourself.

Would you rather be relaxing with a good movie, or taking a bike ride in the neighborhood? Maybe, you have an exciting work project you can’t wait to get start on. Whatever you’d rather be doing, make a deal with yourself that you’ll clean up your messy environment first. Once it’s done, you’ll be free to enjoy that bike ride, that movie, or that important project.

Set a timer.

This is probably the most effective way to get yourself (and your family) to clean up their messes—in a hurry. Typically, this works best right after dinner, as everyone clears the table, washes the dishes, and zooms through the rest of the house before enjoying a little downtime. Setting a timer can really motivate you to stop sweating it and start cleaning it!

Unload the clutter in your mind.

When your home or work environment is messy, it automatically fills your mind with unwanted clutter. You might not realize it, but some of the tension you feel could very well be caused by the mess around you. On the other hand, when your surroundings are clutter-free, your mind is able to focus on more important things. This is an instant boost to productivity and mental focus.

The habit of messiness is just that—a habit. The good thing is, habits can be changed. By making a deal with yourself, setting a timer, and unloading the clutter in your mind, you can definitely move forward with a new sense of purpose and cleanliness!
